Big.Fat.Thoughts on the San Diego Padres Infield

No surprise the Padres aren't expecting to contend in 2018. No one is should be shocked by that, and if you are, then I do not know what rock you've been living under. Ignorance is bliss, I guess. My big thought for the 2018 Padres infield would be to start Luis Urias at second on Opening Day. He is one of the huge prospects waiting for his time to shine in San Diego. He is a career .310 hitter over the course of his minor league career. He hit .296 last year, spending the year in Double-A. It is not uncommon for guys to make the jump straight from AA to the show, and Urias is a dude that would give the Padres fans something to see that the organization is trending in the right direction. Also, you can only do so much in the minors. Urias is ready to roll. I understand they're probably holding him out because the front office doesn't want to start Urias' service time, but there's nothing left for him to do down in the minors. This guy is ready. If you want to show that you're turning the corner, and I think this is the year to bring up all of their dudes to show that, then you bring Urias up. I love the effort Asuaje put in last season, but everyone knows that he's not a part of the future. You have Freddy Galvis as another stopgap guy at shortstop as we all anxiously await Fernando Tatis Jr. I think it is pretty commonly known that San Diego hasn't had a true shortstop where the Padres went, "this is our guy," since Khalil Greene from 2003-2008. The only guy close to that was Everth Cabrera who was in San Diego from 2009-2014, but he was only the everyday shortstop for 2 1/2 years. He also wasn't that good, and the Padres were God awful during those years, excluding 2010. I pray that Chase Headley is not a part of the future. He has one great second half of a season, but he's been an average player outside of that one second half. I don't want the Padres to sign Hosmer, so I would be comfortable leaving Wil Myers at 1B. I love Cory Spangenberg. That dude is just a baseball player. The dude busts his ass out there. I love the versatility he brings. Obviously I don't make the fucking calls, but if I could, I would have Hedges, quietly becoming one of the best defensive catchers in the game, Myers, hoping he can turn it around with Matt Stairs as the hitting coach, Urias, dude is just ready to go, Galvis, stopgap guy, and Headley to round out the infield. Spangenberg should be a super-utility guy all year. Asuaje starts in AAA, and let Urias start the mass exodus of players escaping the minor leagues on Opening Day of 2018.
