BFT on Kevin Towers
It is a sad day in San Diego. It's currently 77 degrees and mostly cloudy according to my weather app on my iPhone. It appears to be perfect for the situation at hand. Kevin Towers, longtime former GM of the Padres and Diamondbacks, passed away at 56 after a bout with thyroid cancer. He was the GM in San Diego from 1995-2009 and the GM of the Arizona Diamondbacks from late 2010-2014. I was not the biggest fan of Kevin Towers as a GM in San Diego, but that was because I was not around for the peak of his tenure in San Diego. Regardless of my personal feelings towards his time that I followed him in San Diego, this man did tremendous things in the MLB. He organized the roster that took the Padres to one of their two World Series in 1998, and he engineered two other N.L. West titles in 2005 and 2006. Kevin Towers also is responsible for six winning records in the history of the Padres that only has 16 seasons over .500. The Padres have made the playoffs 5 times in their 48 seasons as an MLB franchise. Kevin Towers was the GM during 4 of those playoff trips. Kevin Towers is far and away the greatest GM in Padres history. I wish I was around earlier to clearly remember the best teams he ever built.
